Secure Networks For the Internet of the Future
Two new projects at the University of Wurzburg's Institute of Computer Science are aimed at developing secure, efficient networks for the Internet.

Researchers at Bavaria, Germany's University of Wurzburg, working as part of the SEcure Networks for a DATa center cloud in Europe (SENDATE) consortium, are developing secure and efficient networks for the Internet of the future.
"If we want data centers to continue operating in a secure, flexible, reliable, and instantaneous manner, telecommunication networks and [information technology] will have to be consolidated," says Wurzburg professor Phuoc Tran-Gia.
In addition, Tran-Gia says Internet researchers must decentralize computing and storage capacities and bring them closer to end-users.
The SENDATE consortium aims to develop a network architecture and technologies for secure and flexible distributed computing centers. "Innovative technologies and approaches such as the virtualization of network functions [NFV] combined with software-defined networking [SDN] establish the basis for this," Tran-Gia says.
The project, which is scheduled to run until February 2019, has a research budget of about $82 million.
The researchers also are investigating the development, operation, and optimization of virtual network functions and their positioning in distributed data centers.
