The new IBM-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Laboratory for Brain-inspired Multimedia Machine Comprehension (BM3C) is a multi-year collaboration that will be researching the problem of computer vision and audition.

The problem of computer vision spans multiple disciplines, so it must be addressed from multiple directions. Computer-vision systems need to be able to identify objects and establish relationships between them, tasks that the human brain is especially good at. Researchers, using virtual neural networks modeled on how human brain's operate, have produced a range of interesting advances in how computers interpret the world around them.

The MIT partnership is one of several IBM has recently established. Other collaborations focus on artificial intelligence (AI) in decision-making, cybersecurity, and deep learning for language.

"We are in the process of building a system of best practices that can help guide the safe and ethical management of AI systems, including alignment with social norms and values," says IBM vice president of cognitive computing Guru Banavar.
