The Obama administration last week released a report outlining the opportunities, considerations, and future challenges of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The report, Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence, was designed to help ready the U.S. for a future in which AI plays a growing role, conveying the current state of the technology, its current and potential applications, and the questions its progress raise for society at large, and for public policy.

It also provides recommendations for specific future actions, ranging from encouraging public and private institutions to consider ways in which they can responsibly leverage AI and machine learning in ways beneficial to society, to encouraging the U.S. government to develop a comprehensive, government-wide policy on autonomous and semi-autonomous weapons that is consistent with international humanitarian law.

A companion report, National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan, lays out a strategic plan for federally funded research and development related to AI.
