Bringing Augmented Reality to Warehouses

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) recently entered a hackathon to apply their augmented reality research (AR) to warehouse inefficiencies. The Georgia Tech researchers created PickAR, a headset that uses AR technology to overlay picking information so warehouses can find and process orders with greater efficiency.

The system integrates with existing warehouse management systems so the pickers always have the most relevant information available.

In addition, the researchers built a barcode scanner into the headset, eliminating the need to carry additional equipment.

PickAR also features a navigation system that uses the headset's tracking capabilities to map out where to go in the warehouse, calculating which package is in closest proximity and where it is located.

The researchers say the technology could be used in warehouses operated by large companies, or by large government archives and libraries.
