What Americans Are Most Worried About When It Comes to Robots

Fifty-seven percent of surveyed U.S. adults already notice the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in their daily lives, but they are divided concerning its threat potential, according to a Morning Consult poll. Out of 2,200 respondents, 41 percent saw AI as safe while 38 percent considered it dangerous. Still, more than half favor ongoing AI research, even though more think the technology will harm, not help, the economy.
A majority of respondents felt uncomfortable with the prospect of AI making financial investments, driving automobiles, or performing surgery, while about half said the possibility of mass unemployment makes them more hesitant to support AI research. AI's maintenance costs also were a more discouraging factor for respondents than its ethical ramifications.
Former IBM executive Irving Wladawsky-Berger says the wholesale scrapping of AI tools is not the solution. "It means we need to know what we're doing," he says.
