State Progress on K-12 Computer Science Ed Policies: 'we Have a Long Way to Go'

A new study from six organizations summarizes state-by-state surveys on U.S. computer science (CS) education policies for grades K-12. "There are simply not enough adequately trained people to fill the current need for information security analysts, hardware engineers, software developers, computer programmers, data scientists, and other [science, technology, engineering, and math] professionals," the report says. "States must both inspire and prepare a far greater number of students to pursue CS education and related careers."
The report noted eight alliances created to address diversity in CS education, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation. It also said only seven states have adopted K-12 CS standards, while 27 states and Washington, DC, currently offer some type of educator CS certification.
"A failure to act boldly and urgently will maintain the status quo, in which access to CS is available to only a fraction of the nation's K-12 students," the report says.
