New Method Enables More Realistic Hair Simulation

Disney researchers say they have developed a new method that makes it possible to realistically simulate hair by observing real hair in motion.

Once the simulation parameters have been determined, it is possible to edit the animation so a hairstyle responds realistically to changes in head motion, to whether the hair is wet, oily, or contains styling products, and in response to external forces.

"The core idea is very simple: we do an educated guess of the simulation parameters and then use input data to validate this hypothesis," says Disney researcher Thabo Beeler.

He notes this is the first method for estimating hair parameters that considers the dynamics of hair and fits the parameters to captured hair in motion.

The parameters can be used to re-simulate the captured hair and also to edit the animation by changing the head motion, the physical properties of the hair, and external forces.
