Disney Projection System Shines Makeup on Actors During Live Performances

A new system developed by Disney Research tracks an actor's movements and expressions during live stage performances so the actor's face can be painted with light, rather than physical makeup.

Disney researchers have developed Makeup Lamps, a new system for tracking an actor's movements and changing expressions during live stage performances so the face can be painted with light instead of with physical makeup.

The system tracks the actor's facial movements without the use of facial markers, and adjusts its illumination to display any color or texture a makeup artist chooses, including effects that make the actor appear older, grow facial hair, or wear clownish face paint.

"Leveraging these technologies to augment the appearance of live actors is the next step and could result in amazing transformations before our eyes of stage actors in theaters or other venues," says Disney Research's Markus Gross.

The researchers sought to reduce latency at each step of the process, and employed a coaxial camera-projection setup in which the camera detects facial movements and shares the same optical axis as the projector.
