The University of California, Irvine's (UCI) CalTeach Science and Math Program, the UCI School of Information and Computer Sciences, and Google have announced a partnership to address the shortage of computer science (CS) teachers by developing a CS training program for pre-service math and science educators.
The project aims to create a CS academic track in the CalTeach program that integrates computational thinking and CS concepts into CalTeach's two foundational courses and two advanced courses, addressing teaching and field experiences at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
"Working with pre-service preparation programs to support the next generation of CS teachers is a critical step to addressing the growing demand for CS education," says Google's Hai Hong.
In addition, the team is partnering on a parallel U.S. National Science Foundation-funded project called CS1C@OC, offering a program of study to adhere to California's new Supplementary Authorization in Computer Science.
