Researchers at Arizona State University have published a study demonstrating strong public and expert skepticism of warnings from Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates about artificial intelligence (AI).

The team employed statistical/sentiment analysis and machine learning to analyze tweets, and estimated more positive posts about AI overall versus general tweets. The distribution of expert tweets was more evidence-based, with more than half concerning the impact of AI and research directions in the field.

The researchers trained a machine model called Word2Vec2 to analyze the linguistic contexts of co-occurring concepts represented by words in the tweets to categorize optimistic and pessimistic sentiments in the body of tweets. Machine learning was shown to perform the work that researchers and less-detailed analytic scoring methods once conducted in understanding sentiment from a large corpus of communications.
