iuc Gets $100k Grant For Supporting Women in Computer Science
The National Center for Women & Information Technology has awarded the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign the $100,000 first prize of its NEXT award, in recognition of strides made in recruiting and retaining women in technology.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) recently received a $100,000 grant from the National Center for Women in Information Technology (NCWIT) NEXT Award, which recognizes institutions making strides in recruiting and retaining women in technology.
UIUC was recognized for its progress in promoting gender parity in the College of Engineering computer science degree program, which saw women comprise 46% of the students enrolled in the program last fall. NCWIT says the school's outreach and recruiting efforts, as well as its work to identify and eliminate the impact of implicit bias in admissions, were two reasons UIUC received the top prize. UIUC will use the grant to modify the content and pacing of the school's introductory courses, expand peer tutoring programs, develop a model to predict student success, conduct a study to find factors that contribute to feelings of "not belonging," and develop materials supporting computer science programs.
