Ohio State University researchers are studying the security of wireless interfaces in vehicles, the use of which will only increase as autonomous vehicles come closer to reality. The researchers say the interfaces are susceptible to hacks, with potentially deadly consequences.
The ability to connect vehicles wirelessly is the biggest enabler of autonomous and intelligent transportation systems, but there are increased security issues that can affect the safety of those inside and near the vehicle, according to Ohio State professor Emre Koksal. These security issues could take the form of fake signals or messages transmitted to a vehicle, he says.
The researchers are developing an authentication approach that involves multiple input, multiple output antenna technology (MIMO). They propose using MIMO to verify a transmitter's claimed location, which would be important if a vehicle is on a busy highway and receives a signal that the vehicle in front of it just stopped suddenly.
