The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) has launched Data, Discovery, and Decisions (D3), a new data science research center that provides a platform for collaboration between industry and academia in the data science space.

UCSC engineering dean Alexander Wolf says D3's overall goal is to develop open source tools to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the developing field of data science.

D3 is modeled after the U.S. National Science Foundation's Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers. Industry partners will provide input on current industry research needs via participation in research panels, data sharing, and other types of collaboration.

"We will work together to identify emerging challenges in data science and develop the tools needed to address them," says UCSC professor Lise Getoor, who will be speaking on July 31 along with Stanford University professor Robert Tibshirani at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Baltimore in a special session sponsored by ACM.
