Accelerating the Mobile Web: 'vroom' Software Could Double Its Speed

A new software prototype developed by researchers at the University of Michigan and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology optimizes the end-to-end interaction of mobile devices and Web servers.

Researchers at the University of Michigan and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed Vroom, a new software prototype that works by optimizing the end-to-end interaction between mobile devices and Web servers.

The researchers tested the software on 100 popular news and sports websites, and Vroom cut the median load time on landing pages from 10 seconds to five.

The Vroom architecture bundles together resources that browsers will need to fully load pages.

When a Web server receives a request from a browser, it returns the requested resource and informs the browser about other dependent resources it needs. Vroom accomplishes this by first augmenting HTTP responses with custom headers to push dependent resources. Vroom then makes Web servers capable of identifying what resource and dependency hints make sense for the server to pass on to the browser. Finally, Vroom coordinates server-side pushes and browser-side fetches to maximize the use of the mobile device's central-processing unit.
