Making Datacenters More Energy Efficient

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed BlueCache, a more energy-efficient data center caching system that uses flash memory.

BlueCache can keep pace with request traffic via "pipelining," a process in which, prior to a flash-based cache server returning the result of the first query to reach it, it starts executing the next 10,000 queries. The first query may take 200 microseconds to process, but responses to the succeeding ones will emerge at 0.02-microsecond intervals.

Testing found BlueCache was 4.2 times faster than the default implementation of a flash-based cache server. By adding a small amount of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) to every BlueCache flash cache, the researchers boosted the efficiency of identifying cache misses.

In addition, special-purpose hardware circuits designed for each cache operation increase speed and reduce power consumption.

The researchers say BlueCache can conduct write operations with DRAM-level efficiency.
