University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) professor Vassilis Athitsos is working with semiconductor distributor Macnica Americas to evaluate existing deep-learning methods for face detection and facial recognition.
The goal is finding ways to improve performance or reduce computational load to make the technology more effective.
Athitsos and his team agreed to work with Macnica because they saw potential in approaching their research from a different perspective.
"Ten years ago, computer vision wasn't relevant to the economy, but now companies are investing a lot in the technology," Athitsos says. "It's getting to the point where it's worth asking how or if our work is commercially deployable, and if not, how can we make it so?"
UTA professor Hong Jiang says the research is an example of data-driven discovery.
Potential facial-vision uses include controlling who can or cannot enter a building and wide-scale surveillance.
