Office of Naval Research Awards Uw-Madison $6.1 Million For Computer Security Research
The U.S. Navy Office of Naval Research has awarded a $6.1-million grant to the University of WisconsinMadison for research related to software containerization.

The U.S. Office of Naval Research has allocated a $6.1-million grant to a University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) containerization project associated with software security, manageability, and performance.
The multi-institutional research team, led by UW-Madison professor Somesh Jha, will focus on the bare minimum of what a container program requires to perform its job in a particular instance, leading to better performance, easier software management, and improved security.
"If we can create techniques to decrease container bloat, the potential benefit to society is huge in terms of software performance, security, and trustworthiness," Jha says.
Project collaborator and UW-Madison professor Tom Reps notes, "The larger 'Software Customization and Complexity Reduction' program that we are part of is a creative effort to build the technology base for a win-win: for software to be made to run faster at the same time as its 'attack surface'--the number of potentially attackable features--is reduced."
