wm-Developed App Helps Protect Patients' Brains During Surgery
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) say they have developed NeuroMapper, a tablet-based application that helps doctors make better decisions during brain surgeries. The app maps and monitors critical brain functions during surgeries in which patients are awake. NeuroMapper aids surgeons who are removing a tumor or tissue by helping them test whether they are affecting tissue that would impair functions if removed.
NeuroMapper has been tested in more than 30 surgical cases, and it is currently being tested in major academic medical centers across the U.S. The app delivers cognitive and sensory stimuli to patients and evaluates their responses using a sophisticated platform in which two tablets communicate while capturing and tracking sensitive behavioral metrics in real time.
The app also has the potential to influence medical research outside the operating room, and UWM professor David Sabsevitz is in the process of forming a consortium focused on that research use.
