Facebook researchers have developed a machine-learning system capable of automatically creating the best possible avatar of a person's face from a photo via the use of a customized emoji generator.

A technique developed by Google involves a computer searching for identifying details of facial features and then capturing the corresponding art from a database--a method highly dependent on human input.

In contrast, Facebook's tool evaluates both the face and the generated representation by the same analysis and feature identification algorithm, as if they were two images of the same person. When the resulting numbers produced by the two are as close as they seem likely to become, this means the two are sufficiently similar visually.

Because the method is not connected to any specific type of avatar, it can theoretically function with any type.

The researchers say Facebook could apply this information to a bespoke emoji system.
