Researchers at Brown University and Hasbro are using a U.S. National Science Foundation grant to fund a partnership to enhance Hasbro's Joy for All Companion Pets into smart robots that can help older adults with everyday tasks.
The Affordable Robotic Intelligence for Elderly Support (ARIES) project will add artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to Hasbro's line of animatronic dogs and cats, and is designed to provide interactive companionship for seniors.
The goal is to develop additional capabilities for the ARIES companion robots to help older adults with a range of tasks, including finding lost objects and medication reminders.
Over the next three years, the researchers will conduct a variety of user studies to understand how ARIES might best assist older adults. They then will develop and integrate various AI technologies, such as sensor systems that enable the robots to identify and keep track of important objects or help users remember important tasks and events.
