Researchers at Michigan State University (MSU) are developing new hearing aid technology that would eliminate background noise heard through conventional hearing aid devices.
Difficulty hearing in noisy situations has been proven as one of the reasons adults choose not to wear hearing aids, and in an effort to solve this problem the MSU researchers are developing a smart hearing device that differentiates and amplifies noise from conversations while dampening background noise.
"This smart hearing aid device could filter out the noises the user does not want to hear in a noisy environment, and enhance the clarity of the sounds the user is interested in listening to," says MSU professor Mi Zhang.
The researchers are having success with a machine learning-based approach that could enable a smartphone to enhance human voices and mitigate other background noises.
The team presented its research at the ACM International Symposium on Wearable Computers (ISWC 2017) and Ubicomp 2017 conference in Maui, HI.
