Researchers at the University of Electro Communications, Tokyo in Japan have developed Opportunistic Routing (OR), a novel routing paradigm that is a broadcast-based forwarding scheme and does not rely on a specific route to improve route diversity and end-to-end reliability.
OR adaptation in ad-hoc networks has been problematic because its forwarding decision is done by each node, and eligibility confirmation might be difficult in autonomous and distributed environments. The researchers introduced the concept of clustering and hierarchization into OR to make Cluster Heads as a guide to forward packets toward destination nodes.
Computer simulations show the new method could utilize the advantages of the OR concept while eliminating its drawbacks by achieving a higher delivery ratio with less packet forwarding compared with existing conventional ORs. The researchers also say the results imply the new technique could be utilized in a range of environments, if the guide could be found properly.
