Student Device Detects Potholes, Car Crashes

University of Texas at Dallas researchers have developed a device to detect car crashes, which also can alert emergency services.

Researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) say they have developed a device that can detect car crashes and alert emergency services.

The technology measures and records a car's speed, location, and gravitational force, and uses this data to detect crashes and potholes on the road. If the values exceed a certain level, the device classifies the movement as one caused by a car crash, but if they fall under the threshold, the accident is recorded as caused by a pothole.

The device also can send the collected data to a server to be further analyzed.

The team equipped a device with a hardware kit so it could provide its own Bluetooth connection, and they want to propose the project to local traffic departments, as the device's ability to collect information about crashes and potholes could be beneficial to city employees.

The device also can help drivers by allowing for the immediate dispatch of emergency services.
