Computer Science Professor Leads Multi-Disciplined Approach to Collaboration
The College of New Jersey computer science professor Monisha Pulimood partnered with associate journalism professor Kim Pearson to develop a model for experiential and community engaged learning.

Researchers at the College of New Jersey (TCNJ) have used a U.S. National Science Foundation grant to develop a model for experiential and community-engaged learning that they have used to immerse their students in computational thinking.
The researchers worked with Habitat for Humanity to analyze U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data about polluted land, and developed a method for helping the agency make smart decisions about buying plots for future housing sites.
The researchers note they created a database of pollution data, and then translated that data into stories that would inform the community and attempt to persuade them to take action.
TCNJ professor Monisha Pulimood says the work aims to encourage students to become effective contributors in the modern workforce, which requires a pedagogy that emphasizes problem-solving in a diverse and collaborative community in which they can address real problems with peers from other disciplines.
