Scientists in Japan are testing a robotic teacher at fifth- and sixth-grade classes at a primary school in Tokyo. Originally introduced as a secretary, the Saya robot is presumably programmed not to get burnt out, surly or despondent over the fact that smoking is no longer allowed in the teachers' lounge.
"Robots that look human tend to be a big hit with young children and the elderly. Children even start crying when they are scolded," Saya's developer, Tokyo University of Science professor Hiroshi Kobayashi, told The Associated Press. Softpedia reported that the robot's limited vocabulary and eerie expressions generated students' laughter.
