Researchers at the University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering have developed open-source nearshore modeling software called Celeris, which runs faster than real-time.

The software, with concurrent visualization and an interactive environment, provides a much faster way to study coastal waves than was previously possible.

On a typical laptop, Celeris can run wave simulations up to hundreds of times faster than currently available models with equally accurate results.

The researchers use the computer's graphic processing unit (GPU) in addition to the central processing unit (CPU) to make Celeris fast and interactive.

Released last January, Celeris has since been downloaded over 1,000 times by users in over 50 countries. The software has been used in academia, industry, and government as a tool for education, research, and project planning.

The researchers are adding virtual reality and augmented reality capabilities that will allow users to visit beaches virtually.
