­sing Virtual Biopsies to Improve Melanoma Detection

A Colorado State University researcher has been named to receive a Young Investigator Award from the Melanoma Research Alliance for his work on the development of virtual biopsies.

Colorado State University's Jesse Wilson has been named to receive a Young Investigator Award from the Melanoma Research Alliance, which will enable his team to further pursue non-invasive melanoma detection through virtual imaging.

Wilson is devising a virtual biopsy tool so physicians can conduct in-vivo melanin analysis without having to excise living tissue. He seeks to make the multiphoton microscopy procedure less costly by eliminating the inclusion of short-pulse lasers via machine learning and digital signal processing methods.

Wilson's proposed technique is to employ a handheld wand to scan a laser beam across a suspected melanoma to generate an image in real time that shows melanin-specific contrast.

A proposed trial of the technology will involve a surgical biopsy of a canine lesion, to be compared with the laser wand's virtual imagery.
