The International Society for Technology and Education (ISTE) is developing new computer science education standards to reflect what experts and programming proponents call a "new era" in how K-12 educators should consider the subject.
The first draft says the standards will function as "professional learning guidelines to help educators set goals for themselves."
ISTE is crafting the standards with assistance from groups that include Code.org and the Computer Science Teachers Association.
The first draft defines a "learner" as someone who must understand the hardware and software forming a computer and its network and how computing can shape the cultural and social health of individuals and a society, while a "facilitator's" job is to select relevant project- or problem solving-based lessons, support computational thinking in those lessons, and guarantee their cultural diversity.
The new guidelines also should mirror the proliferation of computer science initiatives across different disciplines.
