Iowa Dedicates $1 Million to Train Computer Science Teachers

The Iowa Board of Education has adopted suggested computer science standards, which set new learning goals for students.
Although many Iowa schools already include some computer science classes, not all do; to bridge that gap, the state is offering the voluntary standards and a $1-million state fund for teacher training.
In addition, teachers can earn an endorsement in computer science as a way to further their professional skills and standardize the knowledge computer science teachers have across the Iowa.
The new standards include mathematical skills such as understanding how algorithms work, and encouraging students to think broadly about how computing impacts society.
One of the central goals of the new standards is to build an inclusive and diverse computing culture.
The $1 million in funding will cover training or university classes to help teachers earn an endorsement in computer science education.
