Students Develop App Aimed at Preventing Suicide

Middle-school students in Kalispell, MT, have built an app to help prevent suicide.
As members of Kalispell Girls Who Code, the students developed the "Stop Suicide" app to provide risk-assessment questionnaires, data on warning signs, and directions to resources; the app placed third at the Montana App Challenge in May.
The team opted to build two tests, with one for people requesting help, and one for those wanting to help a loved one.
Users answer "always," "sometimes," or "never" to a series of questions corresponding to the warning signs of suicide. The quiz routes users to green, yellow, or red warning levels, along with information on resources and suicide statistics.
Team member Lillian Lewis said, "I'm obviously proud of the actual coding we did, but it's more rewarding to know that our app could actually be saving someone's life."
