IEEE Makes OpenFog Consortium's Reference Architecture Official Standard for Fog Computing

The OpenFog Consortium's reference architecture has been accepted by the IEEE Standards Association as a fog computing standard.

The IEEE Standards Association has embraced the OpenFog Consortium's reference architecture as a fog computing standard.

"We now have an industry-backed and -supported blueprint that will supercharge the development of new applications and business models made possible through fog computing," says Consortium chairman Helder Antunes.

The IEEE 1934 standard characterizes a "universal technical framework" facilitating the data-intensive needs of applications and services such as Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.

Fog computing enables the functionality of compute, storage, and networking services between end devices and cloud computing data centers to network edges.

The Consortium says the reference architecture was founded on the technical principles of security, scalability, openness, autonomy, reliability, availability, and serviceability, agility, hierarchy, and programmability.

Said Antunes, "This is a significant milestone for OpenFog and a monumental inflection point for those companies and industries that will benefit from the ensuing innovation and market growth made possible by the standard."
