Georgia's Department of Education has announced the apportionment of $500,000 in grants to middle schools for implementing computer coding programs, covering equipment, training, curriculum, and teacher professional development.
The grants are targeted to middle schools in rural, underserved, or high-poverty regions, as part of the Computer Science for Georgia effort to make the state a national leader in computer science by developing and delivering high-quality courses, resources, and professional training.
The program boosts the integration of computer science throughout the state's K-12 curriculum.
"Georgia students need to graduate ready for 21st-century careers—we can't be complacent and rely on the way we've always done things, and we can't wait until high school to start preparing our kids," says Georgia school superintendent Richard Woods. "Coding and computer science is a piece of that puzzle."
