Rose-Hulman Professor Hopes to Get More Girls in STEM by Studying the Irish

David Fisher of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana will spend the 2018-2019 academic year at the University of Limerick in Ireland to study how the university has successfully attracted and retained female computer science students and faculty.
In 2017, 26% of the computing workforce were women, according to the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT). In addition, the U.S. National Science Foundation estimates that the percentage of female recipients of computer science bachelor's degrees declined from more than 35% in 1985 to 18% by 2014.
Fisher was drawn to the University of Limerick because of its focus on hiring female faculty members and organizing outreach programs that get youth, especially girls, interested in computer science. Women represented 31% of University of Limerick professors in 2017, the highest percentage of any Irish university.
