W Professor Receives Highest .S. Award for STEM Mentors
University of Washington professor Daniel Schwartz recently received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, celebrating instructors who have done exemplary work supporting the next generation of STEM work

University of Washington professor Daniel Schwartz recently received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, the highest science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) mentoring award in the U.S.
The award is given to instructors from across the country that have done exemplary work supporting the next generation of STEM workers, especially students from underrepresented minority groups.
One of Schwartz's most notable works is the interdisciplinary graduate program he launched in 2007. The program matched students from the UW College of the Environment and the UW College of Engineering with Native American tribal organizations.
Schwartz "works to develop the individual not only as an academic or with the work you're doing for him, but as a human being," says UW's Laurel James.
