Roboticists from the University of Colorado, Boulder are investigating the use of augmented reality (AR) to improve human-robot collaboration.
The team is researching how AR, using semitransparent overlays on a user's vision via a Microsoft HoloLens, could offer a more intuitive and effective mode for such communication.
The project's main goal is to use AR to convey "motion intent" by displaying the robot's near-future actions.
Experimental tools included NavPoints, which shows the robot's planned flight trajectory as a series of lines and navigation waypoints; Arrow, or virtual imagery where a blue arrow head travels through three-dimensional space in the precise path the robot will eventually take a certain number of seconds in the future; and Gaze, providing virtual imagery that completely changes an aerial robot's form by overlaying a white sphere with a pupil directly over the robot. NavPoints was determined to be the best option in terms of performance.
