Google says the cooling systems of several of its data centers are now fully governed by an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm.
The algorithm operates independently, but is managed by a human who can intervene if it appears to be taking an excessively risky action.
The DeepMind AI uses reinforcement learning, drawing on information from data centers to determine cooling configurations that would lower energy consumption.
A data center manager can observe the system as it runs, see what the algorithm's confidence level is concerning the modifications it wants to make, and intercede if it seems to be doing something untoward.
Stanford University's Jonathan Koomey says using machine learning to optimize the behavior of power-consumptive computer chips within data centers could have an even greater impact on those data centers than cooling optimization.
