University of Waterloo researchers have developed an app that reduces the energy consumption of Android smartphones.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada have developed a mobile app that reduces the energy consumption of Android smartphones, thereby increasing battery life by 10-25%.

Waterloo's Kshirasagar Naik explains that Android Nougat 7.0's split-screen view, which allows multiple windows and files to run simultaneously, drains energy unnecessarily. To address this, the team developed an app that reduces the brightness of noncritical applications to lower energy consumption.

"What happens now is that you put the phone on a charger for the night and when you leave home the next day the battery is at 100%, but there is a lot of behind-the-scenes computation and communication going on, and it drains the battery," says Naik.

He says excess energy consumption makes the phone grow warmer and frequent charging reduces the life of the battery, causing batteries that are meant to work for three years to last only two years.
