Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) analyzed gait parameters to develop software that uses an avatar to predict how many calories people expend when walking.
Users can configure the avatar by entering their height and weight and then setting the walking speed, stride length and width, foot lift, and the incline of both the torso and the ground. They also can input mass and model as it is pushed or pulled at different parts of the body.
The number of calories burned and energy consumption are shown in real time whenever the parameters are altered.
The software was originally designed to study gait mechanics for humanoid robots. EPFL's Amy Wu says, "The software could be used to select the best design for an exoskeleton or a custom prosthetic, in order to reduce the user's effort."
