Using big data tools such as data mining and network analysis, researchers at two entities affiliated with the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil—the Center for Research on Innovation, Technology Management, and Competitiveness, and the Center for Cell-Based Therapy—devised a method to help scientists and companies identify promising technological routes, trends, and partnerships for research in any knowledge area. The technique identifies technological pathways used by organizations and academia in several countries, in addition to emerging trends and networks of partnerships between companies and scientific institutions active in the specific sector.

The researchers determined the U.S. is the leading country in terms of patent production in immune response, while a group of European companies have more influence because of their collaboration.

"Patent databases are more robust and provide a more accurate picture of the state of the art in the field of interest," says the University of Sao Paulo's Cristiano Goncalves Pereira.
