Pushing the Boundaries of Learning With AI

An AI-assisted Mandarin Chinese language-learning aid under development at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is collaborating with IBM to develop ways to teach students the Mandarin Chinese language in virtual environments.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and IBM are collaborating on a project to teach students the Mandarin Chinese language in virtual environments.

RPI's Helen Zhou says the Mandarin Project employs a "cognitive immersive room" with a 360-degree floor-to-ceiling screen, where students can practice Mandarin with artificial intelligence (AI)-driven avatars via combined natural language processing, speech-to-text, and movement tracking.

Zhou says the AI tools provide students immediate feedback while coaching them on correct pronunciation and sentence structure.

Meanwhile, Ashok Goel of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) says his team has shed its reliance on IBM's Watson platform to develop its own virtual teaching assistants.

Among the Georgia Tech  innovations is a Virtual Ecological Research Assistant designed to help biology researchers simulate different ecological scenarios.
