U.S. Army Research Laboratory scientists have developed an algorithm that enables identification of the location of humans and robots in areas where global positioning systems are unavailable.
The algorithm can determine the direction which a radio frequency (RF) signal arrives, which is a fundamental enabler of localization.
The new technique is resilient to multiple scattering effects, meaning that even in the presence of occluders that scatter the RF signal in different directions, the algorithm can accurately estimate the direction of the source.
The research team validated the approach with several publicly available and in-house collected measurement datasets in the 40MHz and 2.4GHz bands, as well as data from high-fidelity simulations.
In addition, the team said the method works in conditions of heavy multipath, in which classical phase- or time-of-arrival-based estimates would fail.
