Taking a cue from the success of Barack Obama's Internet campaign in the 2008 US presidential elections, politicians in India are using technology to reach out to voters in upcoming parliamentary elections. With more than 70 million Internet users in India, candidates see cyberspace as a new way to communicate with voters and are increasingly using such media as e-mail, webcasts, SMS, MMS, blogs and social networking sites. Online campaigning is seen as a particularly effective to young voters in a country where an estimated 57 percent of the electorate are between the ages of 18 and 35.
