Although many sectors of the economy are struggling to survive, the information technology (IT) industry is still relatively strong. Employment experts say that many companies are so dependent on IT that they cannot lay off data center operators or developers working on next-generation Internet applications.
Foote Partners CEO David Foote says certain IT skills are still in great demand. Business process modeling, management, and methodology are one of the few IT areas that saw pay gains in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to a quarterly salary survey compiled by Foote Partners.
Companies are particularly interested in candidates with Information Technology Infrastructure Library certification and Control Objectives for Information and related Technology IT governance experience. Database, messaging, and communications professionals also are in demand, with employers hiring candidates with experience in unified communications and messaging systems. Security also is in demand and will likely stay in demand because few students are entering the field. In addition, the Project Management Professional certification is still in demand, and experience managing complex IT projects and a history of delivering results on time and on budget is very attractive.
Professionals who understand data mining and related fields such as information on demand, content management, and unstructured information management remain in demand, as do those with a knowledge of current Web trends. Other popular skills include IT professionals with experience in IT optimization, including virtualization and cloud computing, as well as networking professionals with popular certifications.
