Global technological research and development (R&D) spending will top $2 trillion this year as governments, companies, and academia push to maintain their competitiveness, according to R&D Magazine's 2018 Global R&D Funding Forecast.

Asia is forecast to originate 43.6% of that investment, with spending in artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, and adjacent software predicted to constitute the largest investment sectors by the mid-2020s.

The U.S. currently leads the world in R&D investment, and this year American spending should climb to $553 billion, from $538 billion in 2017.

China's R&D investment should rise from $445 billion in 2017 to $475 billion this year, while Germany is expected to up its R&D funding and surpass $116 billion in 2018.
