Amazon Sets About Speeding ­p Space Data Processing in the Cloud With AWS Ground Stations

Amazon Web Services is developing a managed network of ground stations to boost the efficiency and reduce the cost of processing data from orbiting space satellites and moving it to the cloud.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is developing a managed network of ground stations to reduce the time and cost involved with processing data from orbiting space satellites and moving it to the cloud.

The service is being delivered by a fully managed, global network of 12 ground-station antennas to process and store the data received from passing satellites using the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) web services, respectively.

Users also can access the company's data analytics and machine learning tools on the antennas, which are connected to Amazon's global network of data center regions and availability zones.

Lockheed Martin is an early adopter, using the service to support the launch of its own Verge antenna network.

Said AWS' Andy Jassy, "We're extremely excited about the partnership we're building [with Lockheed Martin] and together we have the chance to not only democratize access to space data, but change what business and governments can do with it."
