Cornell Tech's reputation for producing skilled technology graduates played a decisive role in Amazon's decision to build its new headquarters in New York City.
Large numbers of graduates have been hired by tech giants like Google, Bloomberg, and Microsoft.
The Tech: NYC nonprofit's Julie Samuels said, "It really sends a message to the broader tech industry and also the whole world that New York City is serious about tech."
Other academic institutions are adding to the city's tech appeal, with New York University establishing a tech hub for emerging media, technology, and the arts, while the neighboring Tandon School of Engineering operates several startup incubators.
Cornell Tech's Josh Hartmann said tech-focused schools form part of a "virtuous cycle" that fuels the city's tech sector; the institutions attract faculty and support research, attracting more students to expand and diversify the talent pool, thus enticing more companies.
