A Silicon Valley entrepreneur's new augmented reality (AR) solution could make firefighters more effective in low-visibility situations by offering a wearable display mounted within standard-issue masks.

Sam Cossman's C-Thru technology has been adopted by the Menlo Park Fire District training facility in California.

C-Thru complements handheld thermal camera imagery with a processor that adds green lines to highlight walls, door frames, or even bodies lying on the floor to help firefighters navigate.

Cossman said, "It can see through dark, and see through smoke. The idea of putting something [in front of your eyes] so that it's always on was the first step. But then the second step was simplifying it in a way that is reduced and made much more simple, just edges and contours of objects."
