IBM Announces High-Resolution Global Weather Forecast Model
IBM will roll out a high-resolution weather forecast model later this year.

IBM will roll out a high-resolution weather forecast model this year, integrating the company's supercomputing muscle with the Weather Company's vast meteorological dataset.
According to IBM's Peter Neilley, the model "will be the most accurate source of short-term (1-12 hours ahead) weather forecasts in places of the world" that currently lack access to cutting-edge weather modeling.
IBM's Weather Company subsidiary hosts data from millions of weather stations worldwide, which is fed into the model to serve as baseline conditions for predictions.
IBM said its Global High-Resolution Atmospheric Forecasting System (GRAF) will forecast weather at a 1.9-mile resolution for the entire world every hour; in contrast, the U.S. Global Forecast System runs at an eight-mile resolution every six hours.
GRAF will run on IBM's POWER9 processors.
