Texas Hospitals Adapt Existing Technology to Tackle Opioid Crisis

The Texas Hospital Association (THA) is adapting existing technology to help state hospitals combat the opioid epidemic by supplying them with better information as needed.
Last year, certain THA members began using a Smart Ribbon tool to provide physicians with just-in-time information when they are treating patients.
Said THA's Fernando Martinez, "When a physician is in an encounter, [Smart Ribbon is] an episode-context aware and patient-context aware tool. This software tool pops up a ribbon that provides information to the provider about the patient around utilization, around cost, around a number of different physiometric values...that are germane to treating the patient."
According to Martinez, adopters simply modified an already extant solution "so that physicians would not have to exit their electronic medical records when treating patients."
THA hospitals also are employing Collective Medical Technologies to identify opioid-seeking habits among patients.
