Gemalto Reports Increase in Blockchain ­se for Securing the Internet of Things

International digital security company Gemalto reported the adoption of blockchain-based technology to help secure Internet of Things data, devices, and services rose 10% in 2018.

International digital security company Gemalto reported the adoption of blockchain-based technology to help secure Internet of Things (IoT) data, devices, and services rose from 9% to 19% year over year in 2018.

A poll of 950 information technology and business decision-makers found 23% think blockchain technology would be an ideal for safeguarding IoT devices, with 91% of current holdouts likely to consider a future deployment.

Among respondents to the survey, 29% said they use biometrics to secure the IoT, with 40% planning similar implementations; 71% said their organization encrypts IoT data, while password protection is used by 66% and two-factor authentication by 38%.

Gemalto cited blockchain as being useful while awaiting government regulation amid growing threats.

Respondents were mainly concerned with determining those responsible for securing data at each stage of the IoT, with 59% also desiring clarity about the techniques that should be used to ensure IoT security, and 53% demanding transparency of ramifications for non-compliance.
